Mae Jemison

The Story Behind the Frame

Mae Jemison is the first African American female astronaut to go to space. She went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor on September 12,1992, was previously a doctor, and before that, a chemical engineer trained at Stanford (at age 16!). While onboard, Jemison conducted bone cell research experiments, on top of her duties as an astronaut.
