Blurred vision

What causes blurred vision?

Blurred vision is when objects appear out of focus or lose their visual acuity. People can experience blurred vision in one eye or in both eyes and there are a number of different reasons why this can occur. Some experience sudden blurry vision and others can experience a gradual change, double vision, or headaches connected to blurred vision. The blurring of vision can impact people’s vision at a distance (nearsightedness or myopia) or up close (farsightedness or presbyopia) which is often connected with refractive errors. This can happen in the left eye or right eye and can also be connected to eye strain, headaches, dry eyes, dizziness, and can be paired with fatigue. There are number of different reasons why someone might experience blurry eyes and some causes of blurred vision may include: nearsightedness, dry eye, prolonged screen use, astigmatism, or a larger medical condition.

How long does blurred vision last?

Unfortunately, there isn’t a single answer for how long blurred vision lasts. Some people experience sudden blurred vision in both eyes or sudden blurred vision in one eye. Others can experience blurred vision for longer periods of time and even for weeks. The reason someone experiences blurred vision will likely be connected with the amount of time that person feels the effects. For many people blurred vision is not permanent, but if you experience blurred vision, you should see your doctor and make sure your blurred vision is not connected to more serious disorders or issues.

Best solutions to treat blurred vision?

Blurred vision can be treated in a variety of different ways depending on the reason for the blurring of vision. You should speak with your eye doctor when you experience blurred vision to figure out what’s causing your vision problems and what steps you need to take. For those who experience blurred vision due to eye fatigue or dry eyes, eye drops are great resources and can help provide temporary relief. If the dry eye persists, you can talk to your doctor about punctal plugs (tiny, biocompatible devices to block your tear ducts) that help tears and moisture remain on your eyes.

For those who experience blurry vision due to nearsightedness, this can often be corrected with contact lenses, glasses, or Lasik. Wearing corrective lenses or glasses may help increase visual clarity and sharpness and can solve some people’s blurred vision problem. Since Felix Grays are available in non-prescription glasses, prescription glasses, and reading glasses, our computer glasses not only help by correcting vision for customers who need a prescription, but also by protecting your eyes from Blue Light that can also contribute to blurred vision.

Can blurred vision be a symptom of something more serious?

Yes, unfortunately blurred vision can be connected to more serious conditions. There are multiple different conditions that blurred vision can be connected to including: diabetes, macular degeneration (or age-related macular degeneration), multiple sclerosis, corneal edema, glaucoma, and more. If you experience blurred vision paired with eye pain, or even if you experience blurred vision in general, you should get an eye exam right away to figure out why you’re experiencing this symptom.

High-blood sugar can cause the lens of the eye to swell which has caused blurry vision. You want to be aware of your blood sugar levels (or blood glucose) because blurred vision can be a sign of diabetes. If you have blurred vision and high blood pressure, make sure to consult your doctor to see if you need to receive medical treatment. Those who have diabetes should also make sure to speak with their doctor right away, since diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease that can cause damage to the retina. Blood vessels damaged due to diabetic retinopathy can cause vision loss. During pregnancy, women can experience blurred vision and other eye problems such as dry eye, and should consult their doctor right away to ensure it’s not connected to something more serious. For instance, blurred vision can potentially be connected to gestational diabetes. If you experience blurred vision you’ll want to make sure to see your primary care doctor to learn and understand what your blood pressure levels are.

Macular degeneration is an eye disease that causes the loss of central vision (or central blindness) and can also be connected to blurred vision. For macular degeneration (and age-related macular degeneration) central vision may remain less impacted early on and then continue to get more blurred as the disease progresses. Additionally, optic neuritis is when the optic nerve is inflamed and is often connected with multiple sclerosis. For those who experience eye floaters, this can also be connected to why you might be experiencing blurry vision. If you experience cloudy vision you should consult with your doctor and check for cataracts. Cataracts is when the lens of the eye clouds and at a certain point cataract surgery may be necessary. It’s important to see a doctor and asses your overall body health since there are number of different signs, symptoms, conditions and diseases, that can be connected to blurred vision.
